X-RAY EXAMINATION FOR SCOLIOSIS

What Is Scoliosis?

  • Scoliosis is an abnormality to the spine.
  • Scoliosis will cause the spine to appear as ‘S’ shape or ‘C’ shape.
  • Scoliosis will cause the spine to bend either to the right or left.
  • Scoliosis is common amongst pre-teen and teenage girls. Studies show that the incidence of scoliosis in women is 8 times higher than in men. [1]

How Can I Get This Examination Done And Where?

  • The doctor you are seeing will decide if you need the examination.
  • If necessary, the doctor will make a request using Request Form For Radiological Examination.
  • This examination is available in selected Ministry of Health hospitals.

Reason For X-ray Examination

  • Patients with Congenital Scoliosis or ‘early-onset scoliosis’ will need X-ray examinations from infant to childhood.
  • From the X-rays, the doctor will be able to identify any missing or fused vertebrae, or a combination of both problems. [1]
  • From the X-ray, the doctor will be able to determine the treatment that should be given to you.

How Is The Examination Performed?

Before the examination

  • The radiographer will explain about the examination and the instructions that need to be followed.
  • You are advised not to bring any valuables or jewelry.
  • Children need to be accompanied by an adult family member.
  • Please inform the radiographer if you are pregnant or may be pregnant.
  • You will need to change into a hospital gown that will be provided.

During the examination

  • The examination will be performed according to the request and examination protocol.
  • The examination will be performed in standing position. For patients who are unable to stand, the examination can be performed with the patient sitting down.
  • For children, the examination will be performed in lying position with the aid of immobilizing devices.
  • Radiation protection will be provided throughout the examination.
  • You are requested to follow all instruction given by the radiographer to ensure that the examination is successful.

After the examination

  • You can changed into your own clothes after the examination is completed.
  • You can then leave the the department.

Examination Report

  • Images acquired during the examination will be viewed by the radiologist who will then report the examination.

Privacy

  • The department will ensure your privacy throughout the examination.
