CTU EXAMINATION

What Is CTU?

  • Computed Tomography Urography (CTU) is a CT examination of the urinary system which includes the kidneys, ureters and bladder.
  • You are advised to drink plenty of water to fill up the urinary bladder. This will help to visualise the urinary system clearly.
  • Contrast media is not used in this examination.

Reasons For Performing CTU

  • One of the main reasons for this examination is to look for stones. [1]

How Can I Get This Examination Done And Where?

  • The doctor you are seeing will decide if you need the examination.
  • If it is necessary, the doctor will make a request using Request Form For Radiological Examination.
  • This examination is available in selected Ministry of Health hospitals.

Before CTU

  • The radiographer will explain the procedure and all instructions that need to be followed.
  • You will need to drink a lot of water to fill up your urinary bladder:

– A full bladder will help produce good images for the radiologist to make a complete and accurate diagnosis.

  • If you have passed urine just before the examination you will need to drink again to fill up your bladder.
  • Fasting is not necessary.
  • You need to change into a hospital gown which will be provided.
  • Please inform your doctor and the radiographer if you are pregnant or may be pregnant.

During CTU

  • You will be asked to lie down on the CT examination couch.
  • The radiographer will explain the procedure and give other instructions that need to be followed.
  • The examination couch will be moved into the gantry.
  • The radiographer will be go out to the control room to operate the CT scanner.
  • However, you can communicate with the radiographer through the intercom throughout the examination.

After CTU

  • You will be allowed to change back into your clothing.
  • Please follow up with your doctor on the next appointment date

Examination Report

  • Images acquired during the examination will be viewed by the radiologist who will then report the examination.
