Everyone knows what facebook is It is one of the most used social media nowadays. It plays an important role in connecting people especially those who don’t live closeby and reconnecting long lost friends.

Tips of using your facebook:

  1. Choose an appropriate profile picture

Avoid pictures that are too sexy or inappropriate.

  1. Biography

Ensure yours and your familyā€™s privacy

  1. Be Mindful Of What You Post

Do not spam others. Do not ridicule your school, your teachers, your friends or your parents and family in your post.

  1. Keep personal things personal.

Use private message for private matters instead of posting it for all to see. Be mindful of other peopleā€™s secrets.

  1. Call Rather Than Post Personal News

Call if you need to inform your friends or family about some important or personal news e.g death in the family. . It is rude and insincere to break important news on facebook, be it good or bad news

  1. Reply To Comments Especially If They Are Questions

If your friends make comments or have question directed to you, reply or acknowledge it. It is rude not to respond.

  1. Be careful of your ā€˜toneā€™

Communicating in Facebook is textual. It is devoid of voice tone or body language. Others can misunderstand you. To compensate this, use emoticons. A simple smiley face after a sentence can neutralize any potential tension.

  1. Posting status Donā€™t overdo it !

While you are excited and enthusiastic to share your opinion and your life events, bear in mind that people reading your post may not share the same sentiments. Make sure your posts arenā€™t mundane and provide value to your audience. No one wants to know your each activity.

  1. Respect online copyright and intellectual property rights.

It is unethical to use someone elseā€™s work without giving proper credit. Make sure you share statuses /notes /pictures rather than merely copy-pasting them.

  1. Do not send random game invites.

Your friends might not have the same interests in games as you. Confirm their interests first before sending out any invites. Exercise caution while inviting people to add any games or application.

  1. Be mindful of your language (and grammar).

Use appropriate language. Write only what you would say in person.

  1. Donā€™t add friends randomly

Donā€™t befriend anyone unless you know them well. Do not befriend strangers.Ā You have to pay attention to your safety as well as that of your friends and family.

  1. Do not post/share chain status updates.

Unless there is a good reason to forward such status updates, photographs or videos, avoid being part of these spam-scams.

  1. Tag wisely.

When tagging others in your posts or pictures, be mindful of how it could affect his or her relationships, career or reputation. Do not tag your friends in ā€œ unglam ā€œ shots. If youā€™re tagged in a picture or post that could be questionable to fellow viewers, remove your tagged name. If you feel strongly enough, you could also ask your friend to delete the post.

  1. Stop asking people to ā€œlikeā€ your updates.

Asking for people to like your status is cheap and adds no value to your friendsā€™ news feeds.

  1. Donā€™t be patronizing or flame others

Everyone is entitled to state their own opinion on the free internet, so thereā€™s no need to put anyone down just because you disagree with them.

  1. Keep selfies to a minimum.

Others may be sick of looking at your face. Too many consecutive selfies reveal your vanity.

  1. Do not say anything disrespectful about someone on Facebook.
  1. Donā€™t post anything that will hurt a friendā€™s relationships.
  1. Do not make friend requests to strangers.
  1. Do not let Facebook use interfere with your daily work and your life.
  1. Do not post information on Facebook that could be used against you.

Tips for parents:

  1. Do not let your child have or use facebook if they are too young. If you allow your child to use a social networking site, you should also be a member of that site and monitor their activity regularly.
  1. Run a search of your childā€™s name.
  1. Learn about the privacy settings in the social network.
  1. Teach your child the value of having a good ā€œInternet reputation.ā€ Teach them what is appropriate and inappropriate information to post online.

Conclusion At the end of the day, itā€™s entirely up to us to follow these etiquette rules. These are just general guidelines. We have to strike the right balance between having fun and being sensitive to peopleā€™s feelings. Facebook is a public platform.
