Why Fasting For X-ray Examination?
- Fasting is necessary for adult patients undergoing examination of the abdominal area.
- This is to ensure that the organs and anatomical structure are seen clearly and not obscured by faeces.
- To reduce side effects if there is any complication occurring as a result of the usage of contrast media.
When To Fast?
- Normally you would need to fast for the following;
– examinations involving the abdomen.
– special examinations requiring contrast media.
- You will be given fasting instruction by the radiographer or a nurse when an appointment is made.
Meaning Of Fasting For X-ray Examination
- It means that a patient is required to empty the digestive system at least 4-6 hours prior to the examination.
- Drinking plain water is allowed during the fasting period.
- The success of the examination depends on your:
– following the bowel preparation instruction;
– arriving at the appointed time.
