How to use an enema

Introduction

Enema is a liquid preparation that is inserted into the anus for the purpose of facilitating defecation.

Intended Use

Enema is usually used to cleanse the large intestine for those who are having constipation. It can also be used to purge the large intestine before the patient undergoes a colonoscopy procedure in order to detect certain diseases such as large intestine inflammation or colon cancer.

How To Use An Enema

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly with clean running water and dry them before handling the enema.

  2. Ensure that the patient is lying down on the side with one leg bent to the chest.

  3. Open the cover of enema and insert the enema into the anus slowly. Do not insert the enema forcefully as this may cause injury to the anus.

  4. Slowly press the enema until all the liquid medicine is administered into the anus.

  5. Pull out the enema from the anus carefully.
  6. The patient is advised to stay in the position until there is an urge to defecate which usually happen within 2 – 5 minutes.

Storage Instruction

  • Enema should be stored at room temperature and away from direct sunlight or humid places.
  • Keep medicine away from children.
  • Do not keep or reuse any unfinished enema.
