How To Use Suppository

Introduction

Suppository is a drug that is inserted into the anus (rectum). Usually the composition of a suppository comprises of an active ingredient and inactive ingredients such as cocoa butter or vegetable oil.

Once inserted, the suppository dissolves at body temperature and gradually spreads over the lining of the lower bowel (rectum) and give therapeutic effect.

Suppository is the best route of administration if the patient cannot swallow or if direct anal therapeutic action is required.

Before using suppository

Inform your doctor or pharmacist if:

  • You are allergic to any medicines
  • You have any medical problems

How to use:

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly.
  2. Read the instructions on the medicines label.
  3. Remove suppository from aluminium foil or plastic (wrapper).
  4. Moisten the suppository with water.
  5. Lie on your side while raising the knees to the chest.
  6. Gently, with your fingers, insert the tapered end of the suppository into the anus (rectum),. Push it in as deep as possible.
  7. Lower your leg in a straight position while lying down for a while for a few minutes.
  8. You may feel the suppository coming out. After the suppository melts in a few minutes, you will no longer feel the suppository coming out.
  9. After lying a few minutes, wash your hands again.
  10. Avoid defecation at least one hour (except if the suppository intended for laxative).

Storage

Keep all medicines in a safe place and away from children.

Store the suppository in the original container in a dark and cool environment unless otherwise instructed.

Do not use the suppository after the expiry date, which is stated on the original container.

Special instructions

If you forgot a dose, take it immediately. However, if it is almost time for the next dose skip the dose and wait for the next dose.

Do not double the dose.

Most suppositories are designed to melt at body temperature. Therefore, immediately insert into the anus otherwise if held too long suppository will melt in your hands.

Cautions: Do not swallow suppository

Side Effects

If you experience any irritation or other side effects after using the suppository, please inform your pharmacist or doctor.
