Mood Changes

1.       Why are teenagers prone to mood changes?

This is because:

  • Many bodily changes are taking place as a child develops into an adult.
  • Hormonal changes during puberty.
  • Inability to cope and respond appropriately with these changes.

2.       When mood are changesa problem?

It becomes a problem when you:

  • Have a change in eating and sleeping patterns.
  • Have sadness and sudden crying.
  • Have difficulties in coping with studies.
  • Become over dependent on others.
  • Have social conflicts.
  • Developed disruptive behavior.
  • Become depressed, anxious, irritable, aggressive and violent

3.         What complications can mood changes lead to?

  • Anxiety problems (e.g. worry intense fear).
  • Substance use and abuse.

4.         How can unwanted mood changes be managed?

  • Mood has a lot to do with the way people think
  • The first thing to do is to detect and identify the negative thoughts and beliefs
  • Use positive self-talk to counter them
  • Change negative thought to positive ones

Common mistakes in thinking

Many people make mistakes in thinking and these mistakes lead to mood changes.

  • E.g.You may think your friend does not like you when she/he does not smile at you

Your friend may have a problem that day and not because she/he dislike you.
