Negri has 92,000 diabetic patients
By Ramesh Pillai

SEREMBAN: There are 92,000 people suffering from diabetes in the state, making Negri Sembilan the state with the highest number of cases in the country.

Of this number, 58,000 patients are being treated at government hospitals while the rest at private centres.

The actual figure of those suffering from the disease is expected to be higher as many are unaware that they are diabetic.

Since 2004, at least 10 new diabetic patients are detected each day.

This has resulted in the number of patients swelling to over 3,500 each year.

Of those aged 18 and above in the state, 15.33 per cent have diabetes.

This was revealed in the National Health and Morbidity Survey III by the Health Ministry in 2006. It is alarming that young adults are among those who suffer from diabetes.

So said state Health Department director Datuk Dr Zailan Adnan.

"The increase is mainly due to poor food management, high sugar consumption, unhealthy lifestyles and lack of exercise," he said.

He was speaking after the opening of an awareness seminar on diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and mental health by the deputy state secretary Mohd Saleh Abd Jabbar here, recently.

Dr Zailan encouraged people to monitor their health by checking their blood pressure.

"Those who are unsure if they are diabetic should see a doctor to avoid further complications such as nerve problems and even losing their eyesight," he added.
