Lately taking selfie is commonly seen everywhere and you can easily spot people doing selfie. It is happening throughout the world and at all age however it is more common among teenager. Selfie also has become our culture’s collective visual diary . It is nothing new especially during this era where gadget is a necessities and easily available. Do you know the first known selfie was taken by Robert Cornelius in 1839? The earliest usage of the word selfie can be traced as far back as 2002 in an Australian internet forum.
What is selfie ?
A selfie is a self-portrait photograph. It is often shared on social networking services such as Facebook,Instagram and Twitter. Selfie is usually taken with a digital camera or camera phone held in the hand or supported by a selfie stick.
Why Selfie?
There are many reason to selfie. Apart from way of communication and sharing emotion in social media ,sender is hoping to get encouragement, flattering comments, shares, and likes.
What is good about selfie
Selfie is very popular among adolescence as it is one of the tool to express yourself. This will allow you to share your emotion by sharing picture with others. By having selfie it might boost your self -confidence and self-expression. Selfie also can be a way to enhance your creativity.
What is bad about selfie
Be careful -You can be selfie addict or having internet addiction (Internet Addiction) if you spent too much time on social media.You can become so obsessed with capturing the perfect shot while trying to sent perfect picture you might be having problem with your body image (Body dysmorphic Disorder). Selfie can trigger perception of self-indulgence or attention-seeking social dependance that raises narcissism or very low self esteem.Having so much issues you might be end up having mental health problem such as depression.
What is your responsibility?
You have the right to take selfie and to share it , but be a responsible person. Responsible youth will only share important and responsible posting . Without awareness of responsible posting on social media, the drastic effect outweigh the good one.You also need to be sensitive to how others might feel pertaining to your post/selfie. Be considerate as others may get sick looking at your photo.
The do and don’ts in taking selfie
- Watch out for your surrounding and ensure safety before taking selfie. For examples taking selfie at the high altitude or narrowed corner or at the train runaway can be dangerous. Your obsession to get the best shot might end up with tragedy.
- Think twice before sharing your selfie.You might be exposing yourself to be a victim of sexual abuse by posting inappropriate photo.
- Remember that by sharing your selfie, you are unintentionally sharing information and allowing opportunist to take advantage on you.
- The text or photograph can be easily copied and spread without your knowledge. Once you press send, it is out of your control. You might regret it later.
