Surrender or Redha

Redha can be defined as wholeheartedly accept what that has been decreed by the Almighty. Example of the phrase that is usually uttered is, “She wholeheartedly accept the death of her son. Life must go on.”

Introduction

Surrender and redha is not uncommon among Malaysian. These words are used when an event happens in one’s life. The usage of the word surrender and redha should not be taken for granted.

Few questions should be pondered when the issue of surrender vs redha is discussed:

  1. Do we really understand the meaning of surrender and redha?
  2. What is our choice; to surrender or to redha?
  3. What is the effect of our choice?

Definition

In this topic, we can define surrender as the sumission of oneself or one’s soul towards a situation. The common phrase we usually hear,“There is nothing I can do. I submit to what had happened.”

Redha originates from Arabic words. However, this word is becoming common and widely used among Malaysian regardless of religion and race. Redha can be defined as wholeheartedly accept what that has been decreed by the Almighty. Example of the phrase that is usually uttered is, “She wholeheartedly accept the death of her son. Life must go on.

Phenomena

Let us scrutinize the case study below for in depth understanding of surrender vs redha issue.

A and B, both involves in a car accident. They suffer serious leg injuries. As a result, A and B loss both of their legs. A and B are sad with their condition. The sad feeling is normal reaction in this unexpected tragedy. What are the options or choices made by A and B to in facing this trial?

A often said that he accepts his condition and surrenders to his situation at hand. He will live as people with special disability and he will face his condition day by day. However, A is feeling sad and frustrated with his life because he starts to feel as if he is losing his capability to lead his life the way he wants them to be due to his physical condition.

On the other hand, B accepts his fate that is destined by the Almighty wholeheartedly. He tries to optimize all possible options available which can help him to live better with his physical condition. He does not let himself to just surrender without any effort to live the life he wants it to be. He believes that life should be continued to its best. B feels satisfied and happy with his life eventhough with incompletebody parts. In fact, his feeling of gratitude is more intense than before.

Why It Happens?

The view of reality therapy by William Glasser will be referred in explaining the case study above.

According to reality therapy, human are given freedom to choose and take responsibility to the choices that are being made. The focus of this therapy is solution-focused towards issues faced by human so that theindividuals can achieve optimum mental health status and well being.

In the above phenomena, A chooses to surrender to his fate and live his life depending on the situation. As a result, he feels disempower as he depends and surrenders to the situation in living his life. A is also experiencing low self esteem and prolong feeling of sadness. He has lost his freedom to do what he wants to do with his life.

Meanwhile, B chooses to redha and choose to live his life with optimistic thought, emotion and attitude. He is free to lead his life the way he wants. As a result, he is not being controlled by prolong feeling of sadness or frustration. He is happy with his life eventhough he has no complete body parts.

Effect of the Reaction

Our choices in life whether to surrender oneself to situation or to wholeheartedly accept what has been decreed by the Almighty will determine our mental health status in facing this challenging life.

When we choose to redha, we will always be grateful to all the blessings we have in our life. Negative thoughts, emotions and attitudes can be managed appropriately.

We will be more likely to be proactive in searching for happiness no matter what our conditions are because we are given the freedom to choose available alternatives for our life.
