The Star Monday, 20/06/2011 Taiwan fruit drink contaminated KUANTAN: One of the two Taiwan fruit drinks tested for traces of carcinogens was found to be contaminated with the cancer-causing plastic additive diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP). .The affected product is Natural Beauty Fruit and Vegetable Powder while Natural Beauty Drink Powder is safe for consumption. Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said all retailers should recall the tainted products from their shelves immediately. He warned that those found to have violated the order could face up to 10 years’ jail, a RM100,000 fine or both under the Food Act 1983. “The ministry is still monitoring the products imported from Taiwan and we will inform the public on those which had been contaminated,” he said after opening the Kuantan MCA annual general meeting here yesterday. Liow said tests on Chuang’s Square Cookies (the brown sugar, all-wheat, almond and sesame variants) found them to be free from DEHP. The cookies were manufactured by Chuang’s King Tai Chang Food Co Ltd and imported by Nguan Seng (1990) Sdn Bhd, he said.
