What is threading??

Ok, before we can proceed with threading, we need to understand first about hair growth of our body.

Hair does grow all over the human body.

It becomes more visible after puberty especially hair on the head, eyebrows, eyelashes, armpits, pubic region, arms, and legs.

Usually men will have thicker and more visible body hair especially on their face, abdomen, back and chest.

Now, let us understand about several forms of hair removal

Removal of the hair above the surface of the skin. The effect can last for several hours to several days. The most common form is shaving or trimming (use manual technique or with electric shavers)

Removal of the entire hair, including the part below the skin. The effect last several days to several weeks. Methods include:

  • Threading
  • Tweezing (hairs are tweezed, or pulled out, with tweezers or with fingers)
  • Waxing (a hot or cold layer is applied and then removed with porous strips)
  • Sugaring (hair is removed by applying a sugar paste to the skin and removed in the direction of hair growth)
  • Epilators (mechanical devices that rapidly grasp hairs and pull them out).
  • Powder (weakens the root ends of hair and halts hair production).
  • Prescription oral medications

So, with the above introduction, now lets focus on threading;

What is THREADING?

Threading is an ancient method of hair removal originating in Central Asia and India. In more recent times it has gained popularity in Western countries, especially with a cosmetic application (particularly for removing/shaping eyebrows).

How does it work?

It is a process in which unwanted facial hair is removed by using twisted cotton thread to pull the hair from the follicle (hair root). Thus, the effect last up to 6 weeks.

What is the the Pros and Cons of threading:

Pros:

  • It is a very hygienic procedure. Only the thread touches the skin, and it’s thrown away after use.
  • It does not involve chemical application. Thus, for certain people who have certain problem with waxing and sugaring, they are able to turn to threading.
  • The procedure is very fast, generally only take about few minutes for eyebrows.
  • Over time, frequent threading can cause the hair follicle to become damaged, and stop growing hair.

The Cons

  • If the procedure not done in a correct way, the hair might get broken. This will result in hair re-growth show up sooner.
  • Inexperienced hair threading can lead to unsuccessful result. The art of threading has to be learnt through generation. It can be hard to find someone experienced threading hair.
  • Threading not generally performed on all over the body. Usually it is only focus on the the face. Thus, some other method is still needed to remove hair in other part of body.
  • Even though threading involves little contact with the skin and doesn’t include the risk of burns as in waxing procedure, it can still be painful. Shortly after procedure, you might feel itch and develop redness, puffiness or changes in pigment.
  • As with waxing or plucking, it’s also possible to develop infection of the hair follicles (folliculitis). Folliculitis can involve more serious side effects. It usually consists of small white pimples around the infected hair follicles and will go away on its own, but sometimes folliculitis can result in permanent hair loss or scarring.
