Urinary Tract Infection

Your urinary tract includes:

  • Kidneys
  • Ureters
  • Bladder
  • Urethra

What is urinary tract infection (UTIs)?

When germs (bacteria) invade your urinary tract, it is called urinary tract infection.

What is the most common germ causing UTIs?

Escherichia Coli which is normally found in the digestive tract (intestine) and skin around the perineum (private area).

Do boys get UTIs?

Boys do get UTIs but less commonly than girls.

If boys get UTIs, they might have abnormal structures or functions of their urinary tract system.

Why are UTIs more common in girls?

Urethras in girls are shorter.

The openings of the urethra lie closer to the anal and genital area.

What is the most common site of UTIs?

Bladder is the most common site of UTIs. Infection of the bladder is known as cystitis.

How do germs enter the bladder?

Contamination with germs might occur if girls wipe themselves from back to front after passing motion.

Germs in the vagina might be pushed up into the bladder during sexual intercourse.

What are the common symptoms of UTIs?

  • Passing urine frequently
  • Pain or burning sensation during passing urine
  • Feeling like passing urine even though there is no urine in the bladder
  • Pain over the lower abdomen
  • Passing out blood-stained or foul-smelling urine
  • Fever

What are the symptoms that indicate the infection has gone beyond the bladder?

  • High fever associated with chills and rigors
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Pain over the side of your lower back (loins)

What should you do if you think you have UTI?

You should consult your doctor immediately because:

  • Your symptoms will not go away if left untreated
  • Infection can spread beyond your bladder and damage your kidneys

What is the treatment for UTIs?

Drink plenty of plain water regularly and seek advice and treatment from your doctor.

Antibiotics may be given to kill the germs. It is important for you to complete the antibiotics as prescribed by your doctor.

How can you prevent UTIs?

Tampon

  • Change tampon and pad regularly during menstruation
  • Keep the genital area clean and dry
  • Wash your anal and genital area from front to back after going to toilet
  • Do not hold your urine
  • Do not use nylon underwear and change them regularly
  • Do not use feminine hygiene sprays or douches because these products could irritate the urethra
  • Drink enough water every day
