Who is Audiologist?

Introduction

An audiologist is a person who, by virtue of academic degree, clinical training, and license to practice and/or professional credential, is uniquely qualified to provide a comprehensive array of professional services related to the assessment and habilitation / rehabilitation of persons with auditory and vestibular impairments, and to the prevention of these impairments. An audiologist is the professional who specializes in the diagnosis and nonmedical treatment of hearing and balance disorders. Audiologists specialize in the study of:

  • Normal and impaired hearing

  • Prevention of hearing loss

  • Identification and assessment of hearing , vestibular and balance problems

  • Habilitation or rehabilitation of persons with hearing, vestibular and balance disorders

Audiologists serve in a number of roles including clinician, therapist, consultant, researcher and administrator. Audiologists identify, evaluate, and habilitate/rehabilitate individuals with either peripheral or central auditory impairments, and strive to prevent such impairments

Roles of audiologist

  1. Diagnose hearing impairment in children and adult

  2. Involved as a coordinator in Hearing Screening programme for neonate, infant and children

  3. Evaluate, assess and suggest hearing devices

  4. Give advices and monitoring of hearing aid care in patient

  5. Auditory training for hearing impaired patients

  6. Advices in hearing conservation programme in industrial field

  7. Advices on amplification in classroom settings for hearing impaired children such as hearing aid and FM system.

  8. Involved with other professional to assess candidate for cochlea implant.

  9. Involved in assessment in patient with balance problem.
